Ready, Set, Go!

California has a long and intense history with wildfire; having destroyed millions of acres of land, burning hundreds of thousands of structures, and causing the deaths of humans, animals, and plants. Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) communities are at higher risk to the devastations of wildfire.

The Ready, Set, Go! (RSG) Program empowers fire departments to engage their communities in risk reduction. The RSG! Program helps residents gain an understanding of their wildland fire risk and educates residents on the steps they can take to reduce that risk.

Kern Fire Safe Council (KFSC) adopted this national program and began educating fourth and fifth graders in Kern County’s WUI communities.

In Spring of 2022, KFSC visited 3 schools and educated 188 students in the Mountain Communities and Kern River Valley.  The following Spring of 2023, KFSC visited 6 schools with 513 students spreading across all three geographical areas of Kern County’s WUI communities adding Greater Tehachapi.

This coming Spring of 2024, KFSC plans on adding one additional school. Our goal is to eventually educate fourth and fifth grade students throughout Kern County.
